In earth tones and subtle shades of gray punctuated by crimson and canary, 40 paintings by Joshua Meyer explore the parallel between artistic and divine creation in
Tohu vaVohu, on display in the Goldman Gallery at Hebrew College through October 15.
"Commanding visions" emerge from the midst of Meyer's thickly layered paint, says Dr. Steve Copeland, assistant professor of Jewish thought and education. "He engages fateful questions concerning the character of art and of Judaism, their possibilities, challenges and problems." Meyer teamed with Copeland this spring as visiting artist and instructor for
Art and the Jewish Experience at Hebrew College.
A graduate of Yale University and the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, Meyer has displayed his luminous works throughout the northeast and, most recently, at the San Diego Art Institute and the 38 Cameron Gallery in Cambridge, Mass. Recognized with numerous awards and honors, Meyer is design director for Hebrew College by day and paints late into the night in his Cambridge studio.
