SUMMER INSTITUTES 2003

Learn a semester of Hebrew language in one month, explore methods to integrate writing across the Jewish day school curriculum or delve into the writings of Elie Wiesel—all at this year's Eli and Bessie Cohen Summer Institutes, June 23–August 22.

Building on last year's success, the Institute for Day School Teachers, July 20–25, will again create a community of educators for a dynamic week of study and sharing, guided by some of the nation's top Jewish education scholars. Harvard's Dr. Vicki Jacobs presents Learning and Literacy: Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum; Dr. Gilda Oran, George Washington University, offers Hagim, Tefillah and Hebrew in the Learner-Centered Classroom and Teaching Hebrew as a Second Language. National Jewish Book Award winner Norman Finkelstein leads Not What You Remember: Jewish Children's Literature for Today's Classroom. In collaboration with Facing History and Ourselves, Jan Darsa offers Teaching the Holocaust: A Course in Jewish History, Identity and Ethics.

That same week, Online MA in Jewish Studies students from around the world will gather for a residential Institute, Authority and Autonomy in Judaism, with Hebrew College's Dr. Gila Ramras-Rauch and Dr. Sol Schimmel.

Intensive Hebrew language courses (June 23–August 22)—a chance to build Hebrew literacy or get a jump on next semester's requirements—include three two-semester sequences: Hebrew I and II, Hebrew III and IV, and new this year, Hebrew V and VI, focusing on biblical and rabbinic Hebrew.

In addition, secondary school Hebrew language teachers may participate in an intensive seminar, July 6–16, led by faculty from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem—part of a series of special Hebrew language workshops offered by Project NETA and the Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education.

Leadership and Legacy: The World of Maimonides, with Rabbi Benjamin Samuels, of the Me'ah faculty, runs July 7–18, along with Liturgy for the High Holidays (core text), taught by Hebrew College's Dr. Scott M. Sokol. Mid-summer courses, July 28–August 8, include The Book of Ecclesiastes (Kohelet) (core text), with Dr. Peter Machinist of Harvard, and Elie Wiesel: The Holocaust, Memory and Jewish Identity, with Dr. Alan Berger, Florida Atlantic University.
