THE AMERICAN RABBINATE

Following a semester of intensive text study, Rabbinical School students spent four days discussing some of the hottest political and religious issues they will face when they graduate. During the December 15–18 seminar on The American Rabbinate, they debated topics ranging from how to respond to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a rabbi to how to interpret the controversial findings of the 2000–2001 National Jewish Population Study regarding Jewish affiliation. Says Rabbi Carol Glass, Rabbinical School dean of students, the post-semester format provided "concentrated time to bring in experts and really chew on a subject."

Guest presenters included Rabbi Benjamin Samuels of Congregation Shaarei Tefillah in Newton, Rabbi Carl Perkins of Temple Aliyah in Needham, Rabbi Rolando Matalon of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun in New York City and Rabbi Ellen Lewis from the Jewish Center of Northwest Jersey in Washington, New Jersey.

For more information about the Rabbinical School, please contact Rabbi Sara Zacharia, 617-558-8637 or szacharia@hebrewcollege.edu.
