In contemporary synagogue life, patterns of denominational affiliation are changing. While Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Movements experience continued vitality, there is a parallel growth of synagogues, schools and other institutions that cross denominational lines.
Will these transdenominational trends continue? What will the relationship between transdenominational and denominational movements be? How will we prepare for a future in which new models of denominational affiliation may evolve? To assess the role denominations play in Jewish life today, and transdenominationalism's influence on existing synagogues and denominational movements, Hebrew College is hosting "Crossing Denominational Boundaries: The Emerging Synagogue of Tomorrow," on May 8-9.
A consultation for synagogue clergy and lay leaders of denominational, non-denominational, affiliated and unaffiliated congregations, the conference will explore these critical issues in light of the changing face of the 21st century American synagogue. Speakers include Dr. David M. Gordis, President; Dr. Arthur Green, Rector of the Rabbinical School; Hayim Herring, Executive Director of STAR; Bethamie Horowitz of the Mandel Foundation, and Leonard Saxe of Brandeis University.
This program is sponsored by Hebrew College and star (Synagogues: Transformation and Renewal).
