Israel, Up Close and Personal

With Israel in the midst of a historic transition in leadership, immerse yourself this summer in a vivid encounter with Israel's political and biblical history. Back by popular demand, Hebrew College Study Tours to Israel will offer two trips led by outstanding Me'ah faculty- Dr. David Starr and Dr. David Bernat-tours one participant described as a not-to-be-missed "'mountaintop' experience."
During Conflict in the Holy Land: Contemporary Israel and its History ( July 2-July 16), Dr. David Starr, dean of Me'ah, will guide participants on a 13-day examination of the tumultuous period leading to the establishment of the State of Israel and its aftermath. Locations as diverse as early pioneer settlements, Arab cities, Hasidic communities, the new separation wall and the Israeli Supreme Court are on the itinerary to highlight the complexity of a Jewish, democratic, multiethnic, multireligious state.

Biblical and Rabbinic History: The Rise of Jewish Civilization ( July 24-August 6 ) with Dr. David Bernat is a 12-day exploration of the world of biblical and rabbinic Judaism in Jerusalem, the Negev desert, the Golan Heights and the Galilee. Stops on the way include the earliest synagogues in the world, an ancient Israelite altar and the charred remains of the Roman invasion.

In addition to study, travelers will have plenty of opportunities to relax-swimming in the Mediterranean or the Dead Sea, drinking coffee in Israeli cafés, spending Shabbat in Jerusalem overlooking the Old City walls.
