March winds may numb and snow may threaten, but take heart. In a few short months, you can enjoy alfresco dining at Hebrew College, along with another rich buffet of summer courses and programs designed to engage mind, body and spirit.
New this summer, Jon Levenson, the Albert A. List Professor of Jewish Studies at Harvard University's Divinity School, will teach
Abraham in Bible and Midrash, focusing on theological and literary issues behind the binding of Isaac and how Abraham becomes a central figure in the encounter of Judaism and early Christianity.
Another new offering,
Sephardic and Middle Eastern Jews in Historical Perspective, is intended to fill a void in the Jewish community's understanding of Sephardic culture. Taught by three visiting professors from the City University of New York, the class will be led by Professor Jane Gerber, whose book,
Jews of Spain: A History of the Sephardic Experience (Free Press, 1992), opened up the world of Sephardic Jewry to the English speaking audience.
Building on last year's success, additional programs will include two sessions of the Rabbinical School's Summer Bet Midrash, advanced study for NETA Hebrew language instructors, an intensive institute for Jewish special educators, focused study for online master's students, new Jewish studies offerings, month-long Hebrew language courses and Ulpan.
