Jollip, an emerald green baritone music monster in the forest, loves to sing but can't seem to find his voice. That is, until Shira the nightingale and friends fly him to Boston to hear the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston's choir and the Zamir Chorale of Boston, Hebrew College's artists-in-residence. Exposed to a wide repertoire of Jewish music from different places and times, Jollip finally finds a song he can sing.
Jollip's story was recently recorded as a musical radio drama on the Zamir Chorale's 12th CD, "The Monster and the Nightingale," in collaboration with the Schechter choir and characters from the Boombox Classroom radio show. This program, which has also been broadcast nationally on public radio stations, marks the first time Zamir has partnered with a student choir in the studio.
"The students got to work on a more adult level musically," says Dr. Joshua Jacobson, artistic director of Zamir. "And through distribution of the CD and the radio broadcast, we are able to bring a significant musical experience in Jewish culture to many thousands of kids across America."
Suitable for ages two to ten, the 45 minute, 21-track CD is available from
