JOYCE LEVY SHANE
HONORED AT COMMENCEMENT

Joyce Levy Shane (R) receives the Sidney Hillson Memorial Award from her mentor and teacher Rose Bronstein and President David Gordis at this year's commencement.In recognition of her exceptional service as a devoted teacher and inspiring leader, Joyce Levy Shane P'58, BJEd'66 received the 2003 Sidney Hillson Memorial Award at Hebrew College's 78th commencement exercises.

Principal of the transdenominational Seattle Jewish Community School since 1995, she has helped the school grow from 42 K–2 students to a K–5 community of 104. Her charismatic leadership extends to Congregation Beth Shalom, where she tutors b'nai mitzvah students and acts as High Holiday cantor.

Former principal of the Portland (Ore.) Jewish Academy Day School and assistant director of its Hebrew school, she earned a master's in education from Oregon State University and has taught in Massachusetts, Ohio and Oregon. Her husband, Dr. Barry Shane, whom she met in third grade, is a retired professor and former Prozdor student. They have two children: Bryna, of Seattle, and Joshua, of San Francisco.
