Dr. Trudy Wernick Karger (
P'55, BJEd'59), class valedictorian, retired recently as the educational director of the Rabbi Albert I. Gordon Religious School of Temple Emanuel of Newton, a flagship school of the Conservative Movement. Having served with great distinction for over 20 years, she was honored by the temple at a special Shabbat tribute service. In 2001, she was recognized by the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Boston for her outstanding contributions to the community's Jewish educational achievements. Dr. Karger was the recipient of the Alumni Award in 1999 for excellence in the field of Jewish education and the College's Sidney Hillson Memorial Award in 1983. She and her husband, Dr. Barry L. Karger, Director of the Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis at Northeastern University, have two daughters: Joanne and Bess, both attorneys; Bess and her husband, Dr. Andrew Weiskopf, have a son, Michael Seth.
Dr. Samuel M. Paley (
P'59), of Buffalo and NYC, is a Classics professor and director of the Judaic Studies Program at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York, as well as an archaeologist and project director of the University's Emeq Hefer Project in Israel. He has published books and articles on a variety of archaeological sites in the Near East, some of which are showcased on the Discovery Channel's website,
www.exn.ca as well as
www.learningsites.com. Past president of the Western New York Society Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America, he is currently the secretary. His wife, Barbara, owns Art Assets LLC in NYC.
Joyce Levy Shane (
P'58, HC'66), of Seattle, Wash., is principal of the Seattle Jewish Community School and was recently the honoree at the school's annual auction. For the past 40 years, she has prepared children to become b'nai mitzvah. She also enjoys singing and is a cantor during the High Holidays at Congregation Beth Shalom in Seattle. She and her husband, Dr. Barry Shane, a retired professor who also attended Prozdor, have two children: Bryna, of Seattle; and Joshua, of San Francisco.
Alan D. Solomont (
P'65), of Weston, and his wife, Susan Lewis Solomont, were honored at the Rashi School annual dinner on April 22. Chair of Solomont Bailis Ventures, a health care and elder care ventures company, he founded and served as CEO for the ADS Group, a network of elder care services. He is chair of the Board of Directors of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston, and in 1997, he was selected by President Clinton as national finance chair of the Democratic National Committee.
Barbara Sachs Speyer (
P'59, BJEd'63, MHL'67) was elected treasurer of the National Association of Jewish Chaplains and is Jewish Chaplain at the Veterans Hospital in Los Angeles. She was also appointed as the community chaplain to hospitals and nursing homes by the Board of Rabbis of Southern California. She was ordained in 1999 in the first class at the Zeigler School of Rabbinic Studies. She and her husband, Dr. Jason Speyer, professor of aerospace engineering at UCLA, have four children: Gavriel, an engineer in Israel; Rakhel, of NYC, studying law; Joseph, a graduate student in chemistry; and Gil, a PhD candidate in engineering at Arizona State University.
