IN MEMORIAM
Dr. Sydney Berg (P'48, BJEd'52), of Marblehead, died on July 25 at the age of 71. He was class valedictorian and most recently served as a class agent. A graduate of Tufts Dental School, he maintained a dental practice in Lynn and was a member of the Massachusetts Dental Society. Dr. Berg was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy and an active member of Temple Sinai in Marblehead, where he served the congregation as a former president. He is survived by his wife, Matty (Lipshitz) Berg; his sons Daniel Berg, Dr. Alan Berg (P'78), and Ethan Berg (P'85); and three grandchildren. He was the brother of Betty Brudnick (P'46), Hebrew College Trustee, David Berg and the late Dr. Joseph Berg.
Herbert Black (HC'61) died on October 7 at the age of 66. He received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Rochester in 1967 and he had been the mashgeiach for Monarch Wine Company in Atlanta, Ga., until 1999, when he retired due to illness. Prior to that position, he taught at the Greenfield Hebrew Academy in Atlanta. He leaves his wife of 42 years, Verna Swartz Black; two children, Chaim and Ilana Black of Jerusalem, and their six children; and Tamara and Walter Silverman of Savannah, Ga., and their six children. Mr. Black is buried in Jerusalem.
Louis Garber (P'66) died on October 29 at the age of 53, following a long illness. President of Garber Travel, he attended Camps Tevya and Yavneh and was a graduate of Newton High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University and a master's degree in Jewish communal service from the Hornstein Program at Brandeis University. One of the founders and active board members of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, Mr. Garber was devoted to many philanthropic organizations, including Camp Yavneh and Boston University Hillel. Prior to joining the family business, he was director of the Jewish Student Federation at York University and the regional director of the Eastern Canadian region of United Synagogue Youth. He is survived by his wife, Roselyn (Fedder) Garber; daughters Ilana (P'94), Shira (P'98), and Yaffa (P'02); his mother-in-law, Maxine (Fried) Fedder; and sisters Lesley Mathews (P'61), and Ceil Garber.
Nina Gleekman (P'78) died on April 9 at the age of 41, following a two-year battle with breast cancer. She was a graduate of Newton North High School, Mt. Holyoke College and Fordham University, where she received her MBA. Ms. Gleekman was an assistant vice president at Prudential Securities in New York City.
According to her sister, Dr. Hilary Gleekman-Greenberg (P'81), Ms. Gleekman was passionate about theater and artshe enjoyed New York's rich offerings and volunteered in the education department at the Museum of Modern Art. A devotée of fine restaurants and an adventurous world traveler, she explored Western Europe and Asia on frequent solo journeys and especially enjoyed the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Ms. Gleekman's love of Hebrew language and Judaism was kindled at age 12 during a year with her family in Israel, where she attended the International School at Kfar Shmariyahu. With especially fond memories of studying with Rose Bronstein at Prozdor, Ms. Gleekman maintained her passion for learning, reading and languagesshe spoke Hebrew, German, French and Spanish. Since graduating Prozdor, she kept up a special friendship with Adena Cohen-Bearak (P'78).
She is survived by her parents, Wallace and Barbara Gleekman, of Newton; her sister Hilary and brother-in-law William Greenberg; and three nephews, Robert, David and Evan, all of NYC. Hebrew

Linda Raphael Green ( P'59, HC'63), a career counselor at the Division of Employment Security in Boston, died on June 8 at the age of 58. She earned her master's in Near Eastern and Judaic studies and a master's degree in counseling from Brandeis University, where she also completed her coursework for a PhD in counseling. She leaves her husband Ralph, sons Yaakov and David, and sister Fay Raphael Kaufman ( HC'52).
Thelma (Frisch) Hoch ( P'41, HC'45) died on November 1 in West Palm Beach, Fla. A graduate of the Lynn English High School and Boston University's School of Education, Mrs. Hoch taught Hebrew School at the Menorah Institute in Boston, Maimonides School in Brookline and Temple Beth El in Swampscott. A member of Hadassah and the Auxiliary of the Jewish Rehabilitation Center for the Aged in Swampscott, she was a life member of the Hebrew College Women's Association. She was also active in the Jewish Memorial Hospital Auxiliary in Boston and served as vice president of the Temple Beth El sisterhood in Swampscott. She is survived by her husband, Harold S. Hoch, and three sons: David and his wife, Sondra; Steven ( P'69) and his wife, Eeva; and the Hon. Rand Hoch ( P'73); as well as brother Louis B. Frisch and nine grandchildren. Hebrew College is grateful to the family for directing donations to the College.
Philip Lerman ( P'61, BJEd'87) died in Israel in March 2001, following a short illness. He was an educator, an active member of Kibbutz Be'erot Yitzchak, as well as the coordinator of the religious branch of Midreshet Adam in Jerusalem and the Adam Institute for Democracy and Peace in Memory of Emil Greenzweig. He is survived by his wife, Ilana; four children, Yonina, Araleh, Elisheva and Shmuel; his mother, Dorothy Lerman of Sharon; his brother, Gerald Lerman, of Sharon; and four granddaughters.
Tamar Katz Schechter ( HC'50), of Rockville, Md., died in April. She held a master's degree in Bible and Near Eastern civilization from Baltimore Hebrew University and taught at the Charles E. Smith Day School as well as afternoon Hebrew schools. The widow of the late Israel Schechter, Mrs. Schechter is survived by her sons, Dan and Ron; a grandchild; her sister, Eda Katz Rabinovitz ( P'46, HC'50) and many other siblings.
Monica Weinstein ( MA'91, Cert'95), alumna and visiting faculty member, died on October 3 at the age of 39 of breast cancer. Ms. Weinstein was family educator, then director of education at Temple Isaiah in Lexington, Mass. She received Hebrew College's 2002 Louis Hillson Memorial Award for outstanding service as an educator in a Jewish school. A graduate of Brandeis University, Ms. Weinstein earned her master's degree cum laude and a Certificate in Jewish Family Education at Hebrew College. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Lindsay Farrer; two stepsons, Jordan and Rogin Farrer; and a brother, Donald.
