Camp Yavneh's leadership team has given a whole new spin to the term "waste management." When the State of New Hampshire mandated that they replace the camp's septic system, which rests below the sports fields, camp administrators turned the nightmare situation into a dream-come-true opportunity—to renovate lower camp.

Yavneh's Big Dig—a series of renovations that began during second session last summer and involved 30,000 cubic yards of fill—will result in a new, full-size soccer field, two new softball diamonds, an additional basketball court, an alumni gazebo, new benches, lighted walking paths, shade trees, water fountains and a level playing field with an in-ground sprinkler system. Unlike Boston's Big Dig, however, Yavneh's remains on target to be completed by opening day on June 29.

"We're very excited about the progress," says Debbie Sussman, Camp Yavneh Director. "It will make a huge difference in Yavneh programming and make the state happy at the same time. It will transform the look of lower camp."

Originally purchased by a collaborative of 18 families in 1943 for $18,000, Camp Yavneh needs to raise big bucks in order to complete its Big Dig—$775,000. More than 60 percent of the camp community already has pledged a total of $550,000, and a campaign is under way to raise the rest.
