In the hands of a master teacher, the world of Jewish history and culture comes alive in the classroom. All the more so when that same master teacher serves as a scholar-guide to the actual places where Judaism evolved. That's the idea driving a new series of international tours for Me'ah students and graduates, sponsored by the Me'ah Graduate Institute.
Summer plans include a visit to 18th- and 19th-century Jewish landmarks in Europe for Institute students interested in early modern urban Jewish culture, led by Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Lois Dubin, Smith College Associate Professor of Religion and Biblical Literature and Institute instructor. The tour covers several days in each of three historic cities: Berlin, the birthplace of Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) and a center of Reform Judaism and Modern Orthodoxy; Trieste, the main port of the Hapsburg Empire and an alternative model for how tradition accommodated modernity; and Venice, site of the first Jewish ghetto, now reemerging as a center of Jewish life.
Plans are also underway for study tours of Israel. For details, visit hebrewcollege.edu/tours, call 617-559-8709 or email mgi@hebrewcollege.edu.
